Speaker
Douglas K. Owens - Stanford University

Should 40- to 49-year-old women routinely have screening mammography for early detection of breast cancer? Does screening prevent breast cancer deaths? If so, does the reduction in mortality outweigh the potential harms from false positive results, radiation exposure, and overdiagnosis of cancer that would not have become clinically evident? In this talk, I will discuss the evidence about the benefits and harms of screening mammography, and explain how the American College of Physicians developed its new guideline on screening mammography.
