In previous seminars we have described an automated decision support system for hypertension (ATHENA DSS) built with the EON technology for guideline-based decision support developed at Stanford Medical Informatics, and implementation of ATHENA DSS in primary care clinics as part of a randomized clinical trial to evaluate guideline implementation methods. ATHENA DSS has now displayed advisories for approximately 10,000 patients in 9 geographically dispersed sites. In this talk, we will present preliminary results on clinician use of the system and clinician survey responses; present insights gained from evaluating the system's recommendations; discuss the role of ongoing monitoring of the system for detecting data errors; and discuss extensions of the system to diabetes and hyperlipidemia.
