Much of the clinical documentation in electronic health records is stored as free text rather than structured codified data. Free text has the advantage of giving authors autonomy in expressing their thoughts; however, the information in free text is relatively inaccessible for systematic analysis. This talk will describe several inter-related projects, conducted by a Department of Veterans Affairs Consortium, that aim to extract information from free-text in medical record for applications in health services research. Examples include natural language processing (NLP) to identify lines and devices in chest radiographs, and ontology development for application to NLP to distinguish infection vs colonization in cases of methicillin-resistant staph aureus (MRSA).
