Large gaps separate innovations in health care from full implementation in communities. Implementation science is beginning to address these gaps by creating generalizable knowledge about what methodologies best achieve implementation of proven health care interventions. Such research involves developing, implementing, and evaluating interventions that go beyond clinical research settings to influence health of populations. NIH encourages "translation of research into practice" to improve health, and notes that one of two major forms of translation concerns "research aimed at enhancing the adoption of best practices in the community." The seminar will illustrate potential approaches, and the challenges, using examples from implementation experiments (clinical trials) of quality improvement programs for hypertension (a study of group medical visits and a study of automated clinical decision support), and from a systematic review of quality improvement strategies. New research opportunities are developing in implementation science for global health. This session will be fellow-focused, describing research opportunities and methods.
