Pedometers, also called step-counters, have been popularized as a tool for motivating physical activity; however, their effectiveness in not known. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of pedometers to increase physical activity among adults in the outpatient setting. Additionally, we sought to evaluate the effect of pedometer use on BMI, blood pressure, serum lipids, and glycemic control. In this RIP, we present the results of our systematic review of the literature and the evidence from 26 studies of 2767 pedometer users. (CDEHA)
