Atul Gawande's famous New Yorker article on the culture of high medical spending in McAllen, Texas spurred the passage of health care reform.  Gawande's essay, which was cited by President Obama, is a distillation of a generation of health services research showing incredible cross-region variation in health care expenditures and decision-making.  The purpose of this talk is to provide an assessment of how robust regional rankings such as the Dartmouth Atlas (which provided the main content underlying Gawande's essay) across time and across health insurance systems.
