Examining the violence in Mexico
CISAC, FSI Stanford NewsMore than 40,000 people have died in drug-related homicides in Mexico since 2006, and the violence is causing concern throughout the hemisphere. In an attempt to understand and develop potential solutions to these problems, a group of researchers, policy-makers, and military experts from around the world will visit Stanford this October for a private, two-day conference. Economist Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait gives Payne Lecture
FSI Stanford, The Europe Center in the newsJohn Micklethwait, the Editor-in-Chief of the London based Economist delivered a Payne Distinguished Lecture, "The World Ahead," on May 3, in honor of the official launch of The Europe Center. He was introduced by Stanford President Emeritus Gerhard Casper. Noting that the economist Herb Stein once said, "If something cannot go on forever, it will stop," Micklethwait chronicled current geopolitical and economic issues that fit that category. On his nuanced list were looming imbalances in the global economy, China's growth trajectory, the Euro, rising inequality and the ever bigger state.The lecture was jointly sponsored by FSI and The Europe Center.

Global Underdevelopment Action Fund awards six grants to projects addressing global underdevelopment
FSI Stanford NewsThe Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) at Stanford University has awarded six Global Underdevelopment Action Fund grants for interdisciplinary research aimed at tackling persistent problems of global underdevelopment. The projects will focus on early-stage, multidisciplinary, and policy-relevant research, and are all required to have a training component for Stanford undergraduate or graduate students. Read more »

Ambassador Pascual discusses common challenges facing Mexico, United States
FSI Stanford AnnouncementCarlos Pascual '80, the United States Ambassador to Mexico, delivered a Payne Distinguished Lecture on Oct. 20, 2010 on "Mexico at a Crossroads." In a highly distinguished career, Pascual has served among other positions as Coordinator for Reconstruction and Stabilization at the U.S. State Department, as special assistant to the President and Senior Director for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia at the National Security Council, and U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine. Most recently, he was Vice President and Director of Foreign policy Studies at the Brookings Institution.
