The FLAIR project (for "Functional Limitations And Independence Ratings") explores quality of life ratings for health states of dependency in activities of daily living (ADL). One of the aims of the project is to determine standard gamble utilities that may be used as quality-weights for quality adjusted life years (QALYs) in cost-effectiveness analysis of healthcare interventions that improve health-related quality of life for the elderly. Ratings are provided by older adult participants. Participants provide standard gamble utility ratings for their own current health and for hypothetical health states of ADL dependency and several other health states. Participants also provide other measures of their assessment of the quality of life of the hypothetical states.

Researchers for the FLAIR project have now completed interviews with approximately 300 participants, out of a projected total of 600. Mary Goldstein, principal investigator for the project, will discuss some of the interim findings, including a comparison of visual analogue scale and utility ratings; ratings for the same ADL dependencies if in a nursing home versus their own home; and the relationship between ADL dependency and mood.
