This seminar will discuss two key controversies in pharmaceutical policy in the Asia-Pacific: the challenge of balancing access to drugs with incentives for innovation; and physician roles in prescribing and dispensing. Anita Wagner will discuss insurance systems and their role in improving appropriate use of and access to medicine in the region; Naoko Tomita will discuss the political economy of separating prescribing from dispensing in Japan and Korea. Eggleston will briefly overview pharmaceutical policy within China's recently announced health system reforms and some issues of importance for U.S. policy, including drug imports from Asia, regulation of global supply chains to assure drug safety and quality, and new legislation to spur development of drugs for neglected diseases.
Eggleston will also provide a limited number of free copies of the newly published book Prescribing Cultures and Pharmaceutical Policy in the Asia-Pacific.
