Approximately half of all preventable child deaths in sub-Saharan Africa occur in areas of unstable governance or ongoing civil conflict. However, except for a select group of humanitarian organizations, global health initiatives and programs for child health services have largely avoided sustained investment in these areas. This discussion will make the case that this current approach is unnecessary and unacceptable and that new strategies are needed and possible to better ensure that efficacious health interventions reach all children in need.
The presentation will include analyses on the relationship between global health funding, child health outcomes, and governance which speaks to the larger dynamics of technology dissemination in areas of inadequate or unstable governance. In addition, the discussion will describe a new project to address these issues by bringing together specialists in global security, human rights, political science, and child health to strengthen current global child health policies. This initiative is intended to generate the analytic insights, political strategies, and enhanced global commitment to link life-saving child health interventions with the essential political requirements for providing them in the real world.
