In the last ten years there has been increased interest in the model of "Public-Private Partnerships" (PPP) as a means to address problems of health status and healthcare delivery in developing countries. While most PPP efforts have focused on specific diseases or medical problems, a number of people have suggested that the model can also be used to improve national health and welfare delivery systems. The World Health Organization's Kobe Research Centre has asked Stanford's Center for Health Policy to create a formal research protocol to evaluate the effectiveness of PPP's in this regard. This research protocol will be presented to a global meeting to be held in Kobe on March 24-26. Donald Barr, MD, PhD -- a practicing internist, CHP/PCOR associate, and an associate professor in the Department of Sociology -- will describe and discuss the research protocol he has developed in collaboration with colleagues from Stanford and other universities.
