The Anna Lindh Fellowship is designed to bring fellows from Sweden, Scandinavia and the Baltic region and those scholars working on subjects of importance to the region to Stanford University for short to medium-length periods of research, library and archive consultation, and especially collaboration with Stanford faculty, for the study of Scandinavia, the Baltic region and northern Europe's role in trans-Atlantic relations.  The fellowships are part of The Europe Center's Sweden, Scandinavia, and Baltic Region Program whose aim is to promote research, and faculty collaboration. 

These fellowships are intended to support scholars from Sweden, Scandinavia and the Baltic region conducting research in a range of fields, with special emphasis on the social sciences, humanities, and law. Potential applicants should take special note of the research fields and projects listed in the biographies of the Directors and Affiliated Researchers at The Europe Center. Special emphasis will be placed on applications which engage these fields.  Applications should testify to the need to consult with particular, identified faculty at The Europe Center, and Stanford University.  The Fellowship awards will include attention to facilitate collaboration between visiting Fellows and the Center's Stanford Affiliated Researchers.

The fellowship is intended to support research visits of up to two academic quarters, to work with identified faculty, and libraries and archives. Research projects could, in addition, address issues and thus involve travel to other U.S. institutions of higher learning and affiliated scholarly libraries and archives in the United States.

Eligibility

Anna Lindh Fellowships are currently offered for two categories of fellows:

1. Visiting Scholars: Scholars who hold a doctoral degree and are currently appointed as faculty or research scholars at accredited Swedish, Scandinavian or Baltic region universities are eligible for the Visiting Scholar category. Anna Lindh Fellowships for Visiting Scholars are unpaid, but include visa support (J-1), and round-trip economy airfare to Stanford. Visits typically span one or two academic quarters. Visiting Scholars are expected to present on a research topic of their choosing in the Forum's research seminar series, for which a modest honorarium is provided.

2. Visiting Researchers: Current doctoral candidates at accredited Swedish, Scandinavian, or Baltic region universities are eligible for the Visiting Researcher category.  Anna Lindh Fellows in this category must be enrolled in a doctoral program at their home institution for the entire duration their fellowship at Stanford. A limited number of these fellowships are available, for visits lasting one academic quarter (approximately 10 weeks). Stanford covers all University fees for one quarter on behalf of Visiting Researchers and provides a modest stipend for living and research costs.

Application

Applications should be submitted no later than June 1 for research visits during the following academic year (i.e. June 1, 2010 for fellowship visits during the 2010-2011 academic year). Applications received after this date will be considered on a space-available basis, but should be received at least three months in advance of the proposed start date of the research visit.

Applicants should send the following materials:

• CV and letter of interest explaining the research project, its scholarly and/or public policy importance, the part of the larger project to be addressed by the research visit, Stanford faculty and Europe Center Research Affiliates, as well as library/archives/data source identified for consultation, a realistic plan for completing the research during the visit, and a summary of funding sources and amounts that have been or will be secured by the visitor for the research visit prior to arrival at Stanford;
• at least two letters of recommendation, one from a member of the faculty of the home Swedish, Scandinavian or Baltic institution, and one from a member of the faculty of Stanford University
