Michael May is an emeritus research professor of engineering-economic systems and operations research (now management science and engineering), and the former co-director of CISAC. He is also the former director of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He joined the Department of Engineering-Economic Systems and Operations Research in September 1991 to assist in the development of a nationally recognized program in government policy-making in technical areas. He was a representative on the Threshold Test Ban Treaty Negotiating Team in Moscow in 1974 and a member of the U.S. delegation to SALT from 1974 to 1976. He has been a member of the Defense Science Board, the General Advisory Committee of the Atomic Energy Commission, the Committee on International Security and Arms Control of the National Academy of Sciences, and has served as a trustee of the RAND Corporation and as a member of the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board of the U.S. Department of Energy. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Pacific Council on International Policy and is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
