CISAC's Sig Hecker elected fellow of American Physical Society
Appeared in American Physical Society, December 14, 2009
Co-Director Siegfried Hecker has been elected a fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), the world's second largest organization of physicists, for "outstanding leadership in promoting better nuclear security and international cooperation and understanding with Russia, South Asia, and North Korea, in preventing nuclear terrorism, and in ensuring a safe, secure, and reliable U.S. nuclear arsenal."
Hecker joins Dean Wilkening, a CISAC senior research scientist, who in 2008 was elected a fellow: "For his extensive contributions to understanding ballistic missile defense, bioterrorism and civil defense, and for his training of the next generation of physicists involved in arms control."
The APS Fellowship Program was created to recognize members who have made advances in physics through original research and publication, or made significant innovative contributions in the application of physics to science and technology. They may also have made significant contributions to the teaching of physics or service and participation in the activities of the society. Each year, no more than one half of one percent of the society membership is recognized by their peers for election to the status of fellow.
