Rebel fighters capture province in eastern Congo
CDDRL, PHR in the newsThe capital of North Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) - Goma - fell to M23 rebel fighters who recently captured the city, reportedly with little resistance from the Congolese army or United Nations peacekeepers. In a piece for the Stanford Daily Nadejda Marques, the program manager for the the Program on Human Rights, argues that the conflict in the eastern DRC will never be solved until the government can defend its citizens and perpetrators of human rights abuses are held accountable for their actions.
