Weapons of Miller's descriptions

Appeared in Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, July 1, 2004

In an article in the July/August issue of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, CISAC member-in-residence Herbert Abrams details the reporting of The New York Times' Judith Miller on the question of Iraq's possession of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). Abrams argues that Miller's repetition of unsubstantiated claims--including insinuations of weakness in the U.N. weapons inspection regime--helped build support for invasion of Iraq. Abrams notes that Miller's reports may help explain why substantial percentages of the American people continued to believe that WMDs existed in Iraq, despite evidence (or lack of evidence) to the contrary.
