Jonathan Farley is a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of the West Indies, Jamaica, and a former CISAC science fellow (2005-2006). His work focuses on applying mathematics to problems in counterterrorism and homeland security. He has organized two conferences in this area and is seeking to create an Institute for Mathematical Methods in Counterterrorism. He is also a senior fellow at the Center for Advanced Defense Studies.
Farley has taught in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and at Vanderbilt University, where he was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2003. In 2001-2002 he was one of four Americans to win an appointment as a Fulbright Distinguished Scholar to the United Kingdom. In 2004 he received the Harvard Foundation's Distinguished Scientist of the Year Award, a medal presented on behalf of the president of Harvard University for outstanding achievements and contributions in the field of mathematics. The City of Cambridge, Massachusetts declared March 19, 2004, to be Dr. Jonathan David Farley Day.
He obtained his doctorate in mathematics from Oxford University in 1995, after winning Oxford's highest mathematics awards, the Senior Mathematical Prize and Johnson University Prize, in 1994. He graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University in 1991, with the second-highest grade point average in his graduating class. Farley has been named one of "15 people who have shaped the global conversation about science in 2005" by Seed Magazine.
