Khalid Medani is an assistant professor of political science and Islamic studies at McGill University. During 2005-2006, as a visiting professor at CISAC, he worked on a manuscript on the political economy of Islamic militancy and terrorist recruitment in Egypt, Sudan and Somalia, and two chapters on th Darfur crisis in Sudan. His published research addresses ethnic conflict, urban politics and the Islamist movement in Sudan, the question of informal finance and terrorism in Somalia, and the obstacles to state building in Iraq.
Medani was an assistant professor of politics at Oberlin College from 2003-2005. He has also worked as a researcher at the Brookings Institution and served as a research consultant on humanitarian issues for a number of United Nations agencies in the Horn of Africa. Last summer he conducted an evaluation of U.N. and nongovernmental organizations' humanitarian relief efforts in Northern and Western Darfur, Sudan.
He received a BA in development studies from Brown University, an MA in Arab studies from the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown University, and an MA and PhD in political science from the University of California, Berkeley.
