Colonel Charlie Miller was a visiting fellow at CISAC for 2011-2012 representing the U.S. Army. Prior to his assignment to Stanford, he served in the White House as a Director for Iraq on the staff of the National Security Council. His overseas assignments include two tours in Iraq, one as the deputy director of the Commander’s Initiatives Group for General David Petraeus during “the Surge” in 2007-2008 and the other as the Executive Officer to then Lt. General Petraeus during the formation of Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq in 2004-2005. He served previously as a Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, and as a strategist at the U.S. Southern Command in Miami, Florida. As an infantry officer, he served with the 101st Airborne Division and the Ranger Training Brigade.
At CISAC, Charlie plans to research the means of formal and informal communication between Washington and theater commanders during wartime.
Charlie is a native of Staunton, Virginia, and a 1990 West Point graduate. He earned a Ph.D. in political science from Columbia University and taught international relations in the Department of Social Sciences at West Point. His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Combat Action Badge, Presidential Service Badge, Ranger Tab, and the Master Parachutist Badge. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
