Research Interests
restructuring the defense industry in the former Soviet Union

David Bernstein was awarded his doctorate in physics from Stanford University after receiving a B.S. in General Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He then went on to assume research and management positions in private companies, including Stanford Research Institute (SRI), Physics International, and Science Applications International Corporation, as well as working as a private consultant. In 1984, Dr. Bernstein joined the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University as a visiting fellow and consultant. In 1987, he became a research associate and assistant to the directors at the center. Dr. Bernstein coordinated and conducted research on defense conversion in the former Soviet Union in collaboration with researchers and industrialists in the United States and the NIS, and organized research conferences with United States and NIS participants. From January 1994 through April 2001, Dr. Bernstein was a consultant to the Office of the Secretary of Defense on Department of Defense programs of assistance in defense conversion in the former Soviet Union.
