government-business relations for information technology development; global innovation and entrepreneurship

Marguerite Gong Hancock is an expert on strategies for advancing the understanding and practice of innovation and entrepreneurship in leading high technology regions, especially in Silicon Valley and Asia. She is the Associate Director of the Stanford Program on Regions of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SPRIE), an interdisciplinary and international research program at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. Educated at Harvard University, Brigham Young University, and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Hancock joined Stanford in 1987. She leads SPRIE research initiatives, conferences, and publications on topics ranging from “China 2.0: The Rise of a Digital Superpower” to “Smart Green Cities: New Technologies, New Models, New Strategies” to “The Next Silicon Valley.”

In the international arena, Hancock has served as an advisor or lecturer to policy makers and executives across the US, Europe, and Asia, from Beijing to Barcelona, Silicon Valley to Singapore. She has lectured for Harvard University, Tsinghua University, Seoul National University, IESE, and others; she has delivered keynotes or conference addresses in more than a dozen countries.

Hancock is co-editor of three books published by Stanford: The Silicon Valley Edge (2000), Making IT: Asia’s Rise in High Tech (2006), and Greater China’s Quest for Innovation (2008). She has served as advisor for the annual Index of Silicon Valley. Currently, she is co-authoring a book on the drivers and global implications of the rise of China’s internet industry.

Passionate about education, Hancock mentors students and serves as a member of the Stanford Entrepreneurship Network that connects entrepreneurship expertise and activities across the university and organizes Stanford’s annual Entrepreneurship Week. She also teaches in executive education courses and co-directs an executive education program for international policy makers at Stanford, “Leading Innovative and Entrepreneurial Regions in the Global Economy.”

A Silicon Valley native, Hancock is active in the life of the community. Marguerite has established and directed community programs, including a summer adventure and leadership camp for teenage girls in the Sierra mountains and an annual international art exhibit now in its 24th year which attracts more than 10,000 people in 5 days. For her role as a leader, Hancock is featured in the book, Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter (Harper Business, 2010).

Marguerite and Russell Hancock (PhD '93), President and CEO of Joint Venture Silicon Valley, are parents of three children.
