Terry Karl Comments on Ecuador's Plan to Seek International Funding to Prevent Oil Drilling
CDDRL in the newsTerry Karl, CDDRL faculty affiliate, is quoted in "Ecuador Seeks Cash to Keep Oil in Jungle," by Forbes. Karl says that Ecuador, which is seeking money from the international community to not drill for oil in Ishpingo-Tiputini-Tambococha fields, "could really be coming up with a very interesting formula" if it uses the money to fund education, health, and environmental programs. "It's not enough to say, 'We are the government of the poor,'" she adds. "You have to have very well directed, well thought-out, long-term investments that produce teachers and clinics."

"A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash," award-winning documentary including an in-depth interview with Terry Karl, to be presented on Sundance Channel
CDDRL in the news: MSNBC on April 12, 2007The Sundance Channel is displaying its commitment to ecological issues and environmentally sustainable approaches to modern living. "The Green," the umbrella title for a weekly programming block that aims to "do Earth justice at a moment of particular urgency," will start Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET. "A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash" will be one of the documentaries in the series and will give the viewers a "crash course in the past, present and diminishing future of oil." The film includes an in-depth interview with Terry Karl, CDDRL affiliated faculty member.

Terry L. Karl to receive 2007 Roland Volunteer Service Prize
CDDRL in the news: Stanford Report on April 9, 2007Political science Professor Terry Karl and Graduate School of Business Professor James M. Patell will receive the 2007 Miriam Aaron Roland Volunteer Service Prize at the fourth annual Community Partnership Awards Luncheon in May. The prize, announced last week, recognizes Stanford faculty who engage and involve students in integrating academic scholarship with significant and meaningful volunteer service. Karl, CDDRL affiliated faculty member, motivates her students to consider devoting their lives to community service, particularly to the international community in the area of human rights.
