'Power and prosperity: new dynamics, new dilemmas': Freeman Spogli Institute's third annual International Conference and dinner

On November 15, 2007, FSI held its third annual international conference, Power and Prosperity: New Dynamics, New Dilemmas, examining seismic shifts in power, wealth, security, and risk in the global system. Acting FSI Director Michael McFaul, former Secretary of State Warren Christopher, and former Secretary of Defense William Perry offered stagesetting remarks before a capacity crowd of business and civic leaders, diplomats, policymakers, faculty, and students. Interactive panel sessions encouraged exploration of contemporary issues with Stanford faculty and outside experts. Read more »

Weiner co-authors new edition of popular International Law casebook

The World's Matthew Bell and his guests report on comments by President Bush regarding Iranian weapons making their way to Iraq. Mr. Bush said he is convinced the Iranian government is involved even if it's not known exactly who ordered the weapons be sent to Iraq.

Bright young stars pursue democracy and development, at home and abroad

In a 1999 article profiling six of "China's bright young stars," the New York Times described Junning Liu as "one of China's most influential liberal political thinkers." Today, sitting in a delegate-style conference room, Liu wants to add a point to Tom Heller's discussion of risk assessment and the role of law in doing business. "There are more businesspeople in Chinese prisons than dissidents," Liu says evenly, with a suggestion of a smile. "So you see--Chinese people mind the situation more than you [the foreign investors] do." Read more »

Jim Fearon and Allen Weiner talk about long-term challenges posed by war on terror

CDDRL affiliated faculty members James Fearon and Allen Weiner participated in a panel discussion on the war on terror. Professor Fearon explained that "mass casualty terrorism" is a long-term risk that will outlast religious fundamentalism and groups like al Qaeda, while Professor Weiner discussed the question of whether the war on terror was a war in more than a metaphorical sense.
