Human rights scholar Helen Stacy named full-time FSI Senior Fellow

Helen M. Stacy, a scholar of international law and human rights, and coordinator of Stanford's Program on Human Rights, will become a full-time Senior Fellow at FSI, resident in FSI's Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. "Helen's work helps to show how the law can improve human rights standards while also honoring local social, cultural, and religious values," said CDDRL Director Larry Diamond. "As an experienced lawyer and legal scholar, Helen adds an invaluable dimension to our empirical and normative work." Read more »

Democracy and development expert Francis Fukuyama joins FSI

Francis Fukuyama, one of the world's most prominent experts on democracy, development, and governance has joined FSI as the Olivier Nomellini Senior Fellow, effective July 2010. He will reside in FSI's Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law, and fully engage in the center's research, teaching, and policy missions, CDDRL Director Larry Diamond announced. Fukuyama has written widely on political and economic development. His new book, The Origins of Political Order, will be published in March 2011. Read more »

FSI's Technology, Governance, and Global Development Conference

In mid-April, FSI convened a conference on Technology, Governance, and Global Development, to examine how technical innovation solves, or fails to solve, the problems of global underdevelopment. Condoleezza Rice, former Secretary of State, gave a lunch keynote address with a focus on why democracies are more effective in delivering economic development. Stanford University's 2009 Annual Report features highlights of The International Initiative, co-chaired by FSI Director Coit Blacker and Elisabeth Pate-Cornell, new grants from the Presidential Fund for Innovation in International Studies in 2009, FSI scholars serving in the Obama administration, and FSI training of the new Global Health Corps.

Carlos Pascual '80 named U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, joins President Obama in Guadalajara

Carlos Pascual, Stanford class of 1980, has been named U.S. Ambassador to Mexico. In an auspicious start to his new role, Pascual joined President Obama in Guadalajara, Mexico on August 9 at the start of the mini-summit with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The annual meeting was started four years ago as a way for the three neighboring countries to build on ties established by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and to address contentious trade and immigration issues. Also on the summit agenda this year were the economic crisis, climate change, the swine flu pandemic and the battle against drug trafficking. Read more »
