Gaba leads first expert conference on long-term impact of surgery, anesthesia
CHP/PCOR NewsCHP/PCOR fellow David M. Gaba led an expert-panel conference on "The Long-term Impact of Surgery and Anesthesia," convened by the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation on Sept. 21-22 in Boston. The conference was held in light a growing awareness among medical experts that surgery and anesthesia may have a much more serious and more long-term impact on patients than was previously thought. Gaba's pioneering work in medical simulation cited in magazine, news articles
CHP/PCOR in the news: Wired magazine, Portland Oregonian on August 10, 2004CHP/PCOR fellow David Gaba's pioneering work in developing medical simulators is discussed in Wired magazine and Portland Oregonian articles that describe the advantages of and increasing use of simulators in medical education.
The articles, which describe the currently available mannequins and how they work, both note that Gaba was a pioneer who helped develop the first sophisticated, lifelike simulators 20 years ago. In addition, the Portland Oregonian article discusses a statewide program in Oregon designed to fund and promote the use of medical simulators throughout the state.

Gaba comments on new surgical "timeout" rules on National Public Radio
CHP/PCOR in the news: Morning Edition, National Public Radio on July 1, 2004CHP/PCOR fellow David Gaba provided comment for a National Public Radio segment about new rules from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, mandating a "timeout" before surgeries, to prevent errors by verifying the patient's identity, surgical site and type of procedure. Gaba said that in surgery, as in other high-risk endeavors such as aviation, all members of the team must feel free to speak up if they see a potential error. The segment aired July 1 on "Morning Edition."
