Experts gather to define a framework for SMP research
Shorenstein APARC, SPRIE NewsDespite the growing adoption of social media platforms as a business tool, this is still a relatively new and under-studied area of technology—even in Silicon Valley where many SMP innovations originate, says Rafiq Dossani, a senior research scholar at Stanford University's Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center. He and other academic and industry experts convened at Stanford on May 25 for a discussion of SMP business trends, especially in the areas of recruitment and business development in Silicon Valley. Corporate Affiliates Visiting Fellow Takeshi Kondo reflects on the past year
Shorenstein APARC, Shorenstein APARC Corporate Affiliates NewsTakeshi Kondo was undergoing training as a new Mitsubishi Electric systems engineer in Kobe, Japan when the massive 7.2-magnitude Great Hanshin earthquake struck in 1995. When Japan was hit by the double disaster of an 8.9-magnitude earthquake and a tsunami in March 2011, Kondo was at Stanford University participating in the Corporate Affiliates Visiting Fellows Program at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center. The March tragedy called to mind the 1995 Kobe earthquake and underscored for him the strength of the U.S.-Japan relationship in the face of adversity. North Korea economic officials visit Stanford
Shorenstein APARC, KSP NewsOn Friday, April 1, Stanford University hosted twelve North Korean officials making an unprecedented economic tour of the United States. Organized by Professor Susan Shirk of the University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, the two-week tour of American businesses and academic institutions was an opportunity for the visitors to see firsthand what improved relations with the United States might mean in terms of economic cooperation. Henry Rowen proposes "A New York Solution for Bailing out California"
Shorenstein APARC, SPRIE Op-ed: The Wall Street Journal on July 8, 2009In an opinion piece for The Wall Street Journal, SPRIE Co-Director Henry Rowen looks to 1970s New York City for a solution to California's current budgetary crisis. While then-president Gerald Ford refused a federal bailout of the bankrupt city, in the end Washington did provide assistance. California needs help, Rowen argues, but not without reform, and an unconditional bailout will only delay that needed reform.

His piece, "The Curious Life of Clusters," argues that success for Asian clusters needs "national rules that encourage entrepreneurship, openness to foreign connections of various kinds and support for research."
