Two years after the events marking the Arab Spring, Hicham Ben Abdallah assesses the state of democratic development across the Middle East and North Africa in a piece for Le Monde Diplomatique and an interview with the Brazilian publication O Globo. Abdallah, a consulting professor at FSI and CDDRL, describes the stalled democratic transitions in Egypt and Tunisia, growing opposition to Arab monarchies, and the Syrian civil war that could ignite religious tensions across the region.

While Morocco has not witnessed the same degree of revolutionary upheaval as it's North African neighbors, a constitutional referendum this summer ushered in a series of reforms to address popular pressure from the street. CDDRL Consulting Professor Hicham Ben Abdallah was interviewed in the weekly French magazine, Le Nouvel Observateur where he commented on the recent parliamentary election, the victory of the Justice and Development Party and what this means for the future of democracy in the kingdom. Marc Perelman of France 24 speaks to Morocco's Moulay Hicham Ben Abdallah, scholar at FSI's Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. Hicham Ben Abdallah supports initiatives that call for the emergence of democracy in Morocco and explains how more democracy would be in the interest of the survival of the monarchy in the long run. We are dealing with new generations, he emphasizes, that can exploit technology, are largely without ideology, and are extremely articulate.
