Open Government Partnership launched at the United Nations

CDDRL in the news: The Economist on October 8, 2011

The Open Government Partnership (OGP) officially debuted at the United Nations in September. This global network comprised of reform-minded governments and NGOs sets new standards for government openness and transparency. Professor Jeremy Weinstein, faculty member at CDDRL, was instrumental in developing OGP while serving in the Obama administration as the Director of Democracy. On October 8, The Economist featured a piece on the OGP initiative discussing the merits and drawbacks of this new anti-corruption club. Read more »

Honors students explore challenges of policy implementation, assessment in Washington, D.C.

In September, honors students from FSI's two undergraduate honors programs - the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) and the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) - traveled to Washington, D.C., with their faculty advisors for senior-level policy briefings with U.S. government officials and major international organizations, NGOs, and think tanks. A highlight was a meeting at the National Security Council with two leading Stanford foreign policy experts serving in the current administration: Michael McFaul, President Obama's senior advisor on Russia; and Jeremy Weinstein, Director for Democracy on the National Security Council Staff. CISAC goes to Washington

CISAC may be geographically distant from Washington, DC, but its influence inside the Beltway has been underscored by five scholars now serving in the Obama administration. Mariano-Florentino Cuellar, Michael McFaul, Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, Paul Stockton and Jeremy Weinstein have all been closely affiliated with the center. Read more »
