Large variations found among Calif. hospitals
CHP/PCOR NewsThe report led by CHP/PCOR faculty fellow Laurence Baker and colleagues found large variations among California hospitals the intensity with which the facilities treat seriously ill patients. Variations were found among fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries, as well as among nonelderly patients with private insurance and Medicare HMO beneficiaries.

Premature newborns fare better in large hospitals
CHP/PCOR in the newsA recent study, conducted in part by CHP/PCOR researchers, found that premature newborns face a higher risk of death when treated in smaller intensive care units at community hospitals.

Health care costs to double by 2016
CHP/PCOR in the news: San Francisco Chronicle on February 23, 2007CHP/PCOR fellow Laurence Baker provided comments in a piece that discusses the rapidly rising health care costs cited in several reports. The reports suggest that health care costs will nearly double in 2016. Baker attributes the increase in medical costs to the growing demand for new technologies that are often expensive. The improved bargaining power of doctors and hospitals is also cited as a reason for increased costs.

The Biotech Bubble: Why Stem-Cell Research Won't Make States Rich
CHP/PCOR in the news: Slate Magazine on February 6, 2007CHP/PCOR fellow Laurence Baker, a co-author of a recent study on stem cell research, was quoted in a Slate article on conflicting studies on the amount of revenue that stem cell research might generate for the states. Baker's research suggests that stem cell research would "generate state revenues and health care savings of $6.4 to $12.6 billion over 30 years," turning a $1 billion profit for California after accounting for state bonds used to fund research and bond interest payments. The analysis, entitled "Economic Impact Analysis: Proposition 71 - California Stem Cell Research and Cures" is a report commission by Californians for Stem Cell Research and Cures.

In SF Chronicle, Baker discusses rising rate of uninsured, lack of consensus on solutions
CHP/PCOR in the newsCHP/PCOR fellow Laurence Baker comments in an Aug. 30 San Francisco Chronicle article on new U.S. census figures which found that a record 46.6 million Americans had no health insurance in 2005 and that fewer people received coverage through their employers. Baker said the number of recent legislative efforts to reduce the number of uninsured show rising concern over the issue, but that there is little consensus on how best to solve the problem.
