Michael McFaul, a Stanford political science professor, senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and Hoover Institution Bing Senior Fellow, has been nominated by President Obama to serve as the next ambassador to Russia. If confirmed, McFaul, who has also served as FSI's deputy director and director of its Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law, will succeed John Beyrle. Read more »

At the Group of Eight Summit in Deauville, France, President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev discussed Russia's bid to join the WTO and its concerns about deployment of a U.S. missile defense system in Eastern Europe. "They have a perception that when we get to that phase, that there may be some capability to threaten what we call strategic stability," said Michael McFaul, senior director for Russia on the National Security Council and former CDDRL Director and FSI Deputy Director. "We have no intention of doing that."
