Perry says U.S. can break dependence on foreign oil within 10 years
in the newsWilliam J. Perry, former secretary of defense and CISAC faculty member, says the United States has the means to end its dependence on foreign oil due to investments and advancements in battery technology and alternative energy sources. Perry, the current chair of the U.S. Secretary of Energy’s advisory board, says that although nuclear power could increase proliferation risks, the reduced cash flows to OPEC countries could strengthen global security.

Gen. John M. Shalikashvili dies at age 75
CISAC, FSI Stanford in the newsGen. John Shalikashvili, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, died Saturday morning at the age of 75. He had served as a visiting professor at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and at CISAC, and as a senior adviser to the Preventive Defense Project, a research collaboration of Stanford and Harvard Universities. North Korea economic officials visit Stanford
Shorenstein APARC, KSP NewsOn Friday, April 1, Stanford University hosted twelve North Korean officials making an unprecedented economic tour of the United States. Organized by Professor Susan Shirk of the University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, the two-week tour of American businesses and academic institutions was an opportunity for the visitors to see firsthand what improved relations with the United States might mean in terms of economic cooperation.
