Research at CISAC

CISAC's work is organized around formal research projects as well as broader themes involving collaboration among individual scholars. The Center's research and track-two diplomacy address the following areas of concern, which often share interdisciplinary connections: Nuclear and Related Security Issues, Global Governance, International Relations, Terrorism, Counterterrorism and Homeland Security, and Conflict Resolution.

CISAC Programs & Research Areas

Conflict Resolution
This area focuses on research related to failed states and state building, civil wars, conflict resolution and peacekeeping, refugees and democratic change.

Global Governance and Organizations
Scholars analyze the capacity of international organizations to address transnational issues such as security, pandemics and environmental change. Researchers also are involved in work aimed at revitalizing organizations to make them more effective and responsive to evolving global challenges.

International Relations in a Connected World
This field looks at the causes of war, nationalism, ethics and countries in transition. In addition to U.S. foreign and defense policy, Northeast Asia, China, South Asia, the Middle East, Russia and Eastern Europe are principal areas of focus.

Nuclear and Related Security Issues
Researchers examine a range of topics including nuclear safety and security, nuclear nonproliferation, regional and global nuclear politics, ballistic missile defense, nuclear doctrine and nuclear forces, nuclear history, science and technology studies, and nuclear energy.

Terrorism, Counterterrorism and Homeland Security
This area encompasses research into terrorist groups and their organizational methods, the legal, political, technical and organizational issues related to counterterrorism, U.S. homeland security politics and practices, energy security and bioterrorism.
