This study seeks to gain a better understanding of the incidence of obesity-related healthcare expenditures. Based on primary datasets, this study will determine the extent to which workers bear the incidence of higher health insurance premiums (via lower wages) due to obesity-related healthcare costs. The pilot work done here will also help to develop research proposals exploring how obesity-related healthcare costs are passed on to individuals, and the implications of the prevalence of obesity-related healthcare costs for incentives to control weight.

This study is a seed project for the Center on the Demography and Economics of Health and Aging.
