This study aims to develop the largest and most advanced collection of managed care measures in the country. These will include data on the prevalence and market share of various types of health plans; data on competition between plans; and data on the specific cost-reducing activities of plans, such as capitation, utilization management and restrictions on provider choice. This information will enable investigators to examine the impact of the growth of managed care on the costs and outcomes of patient care. It will also assess the effects of legislative and regulatory policies on managed care growth.
