Khalid Medani: What might happen next in Sudan?

But having failed to build unity out of diversity, Khalid Medani asks in a Journal of Democracy article whether Sudan will plunge into conflict or even a new round of civil war.

Cultural critic Susie Linfield discusses 'The ethics of seeing'
As a little girl Susie Linfield was captivated by a book entitled The Black Book of Polish Jewry that included photos of starving Jews in the ghettos. "I was grieved by them. I was shamed by them. But I was also sort of compelled by them," says Linfield, director of the Cultural Reporting and Criticism Program at New York University. Decades later, she reflected again on the way photographs informed her view of war as she examined photos from the Balkans and Rwanda. In her book, The Cruel Radiance: Photography and Political Violence (University of Chicago Press), Linfield returns to this theme. She spoke at Stanford as part of the Ethics and War series, sponsored in part by the Center for International Security and Cooperation, and talked with CISAC about the political context behind warfare and what she calls "the ethics of seeing." James Fearon: Promoting Peace and Prosperity
CDDRL, FSI Stanford, CISAC in the news: The Globe and Mail on May 12, 2010"Governing for peace and prosperity presents colossal policy challenges," says CDDRL and CISAC faculty member James Fearon in a winning entry for the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research's "Next Big Question" series. "More than one-third of the world's citizens live in poverty and some 26 countries have civil wars ongoing," Fearon says. "Nations must create institutions that allow all social groups to participate and benefit from the economy and hold political leaders accountable."

Steve Coll Addresses "Globalization of Terror"
CISAC, FSI Stanford NewsThe Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Ghost Wars offered the 2010 Payne Lecture on March 4 at FSI, with a focus on Pakistan. President of the New America Foundation and a staff writer at the New Yorker, Coll also served as managing editor of the Washington Post and spent more than 20 years studying the geo-politics of Pakistan and the region.

Alexander B. Downes, former CISAC fellow, awarded Lepgold Book Prize
in the newsDownes, an assistant professor of political science at Duke, has won the annual prize for his book, "Targeting Civilians in War," which is based on his dissertation that he completed at CISAC in 2003-04.
