Charles Perrow discusses the "inevitability of accidents"
CISAC, FSI Stanford Op-edWriting in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, sociologist Charles Perrow argues that "some complex systems with catastrophic potential are just too dangerous to exist because they cannot be made safe, regardless of human effort." Perrow, a visiting professor at CISAC, is the author of the landmark 1984 book Normal Accidents: Living with High-Risk Technologies.

CISAC awards certificates in international security studies to 12 seniors
in the newsCISAC conferred honors certificates to 12 undergraduates at a ceremony held under a sprawling oak tree outside Encina Hall on Friday, June 12. Students included Jane Esberg, who was awarded the Firestone Medal for her thesis on Regimes of Terror: The Relationship between Democracy and Terrorism in Chile and Sarah Catanzaro, who received the William J. Perry Prize for her research on Bin Laden's Henchmen: Al Qa'ida's Commanding Officers who are Leading the Global Jihad. The students were participants in CISAC's year-long Interschool Honors Program in International Security Studies. Read more »

Book offers new roadmap for tackling transnational threats
As fallout from accelerating climate change and the economic meltdown reveals, today's gravest threats are transnational, demanding unprecedented cooperation among competing nations to find lasting solutions. The policies and strategies developed for the balance-of-power rivalries of the 20th century no longer apply in this one, according to the authors of "Power & Responsibility," a book launched March 17 at Stanford.
