Martha Crenshaw awarded $500,000 to study terrorist patterns
CISAC, FSI Stanford NewsCrenshaw, a senior fellow at FSI's Center for International Security and Cooperation, has received a National Science Foundation grant to identify patterns in the evolution of terrorist organizations. "Mapping Terrorist Organizations" will be the first worldwide study to analyze terrorist groups and trace their relationships over time. Read more »

Former CISAC fellow wins Carnegie award to study Islamist militancy
in the news: McGill Reporter on May 3, 2007Khalid Medani, a former CISAC visiting professor and fellow, is one of 21 Carnegie Scholars selected to receive a two-year grant beginning this fall. Medani will receive $100,000 to support his study of Islamist militancy and recruitment in Egypt, Sudan, and Somalia. The grant will enable him to conduct further research on the topic he studied as a CISAC visiting professor in 2005-2006. Read more »

Iraq war has Bush Doctrine in tatters

ElBaradei discusses future of nuclear energy and weapons
The nuclear nonproliferation regime is in serious need of repair, said Mohamed ElBaradei, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, in a lecture titled "The Nuclear Future" at Stanford's Memorial Auditorium. Describing the regime as "dysfunctional," he said, "Events in the last few years have made it clear that we need to change course." ElBaradei, who, with the IAEA, received the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize, spoke at FSI's Payne Lecture, with CISAC director Scott Sagan posing questions and moderating.
