"On the surface, all the elements are in place for an economic love affair between the United States and India," she writes. "India's economy is growing at a very healthy 8 percent clip, and its democratic political system and rule of law, not to mention its widespread English fluency, should make it relatively easy for U.S. companies to sell into India and to invest there." So why do the numbers tell a different story?

Honors students explore challenges of policy implementation, assessment in Washington, D.C.
CISAC, CDDRL, FSI Stanford NewsIn September, honors students from FSI's two undergraduate honors programs - the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) and the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) - traveled to Washington, D.C., with their faculty advisors for senior-level policy briefings with U.S. government officials and major international organizations, NGOs, and think tanks. A highlight was a meeting at the National Security Council with two leading Stanford foreign policy experts serving in the current administration: Michael McFaul, President Obama's senior advisor on Russia; and Jeremy Weinstein, Director for Democracy on the National Security Council Staff. CISAC, FSI Stanford NewsSecretary of State Clinton spoke at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. May 27 on the administration's first National Security Strategy, a report submitted to Congress by each President to outline the intended U.S. response to major national security concerns. Steve Coll Addresses "Globalization of Terror"
CISAC, FSI Stanford NewsThe Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Ghost Wars offered the 2010 Payne Lecture on March 4 at FSI, with a focus on Pakistan. President of the New America Foundation and a staff writer at the New Yorker, Coll also served as managing editor of the Washington Post and spent more than 20 years studying the geo-politics of Pakistan and the region.
