Honors students explore challenges of policy implementation, assessment in Washington, D.C.
CISAC, CDDRL, FSI Stanford NewsIn September, honors students from FSI's two undergraduate honors programs - the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) and the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) - traveled to Washington, D.C., with their faculty advisors for senior-level policy briefings with U.S. government officials and major international organizations, NGOs, and think tanks. A highlight was a meeting at the National Security Council with two leading Stanford foreign policy experts serving in the current administration: Michael McFaul, President Obama's senior advisor on Russia; and Jeremy Weinstein, Director for Democracy on the National Security Council Staff. Eileen Donahoe confirmed as US Ambassador to UN Human Rights Council
CISAC, FSI Stanford in the newsThe U.S. Senate on March 3 confirmed the nomination of CISAC Affiliate Donahoe as representative to the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland. In this role, she will be responsible for advancing U.S. policies on the council to ensure protection of universally agreed human rights standards. Read more »

Alexander B. Downes, former CISAC fellow, awarded Lepgold Book Prize
in the newsDownes, an assistant professor of political science at Duke, has won the annual prize for his book, "Targeting Civilians in War," which is based on his dissertation that he completed at CISAC in 2003-04.

Michael Chaitkin, CISAC 2008 Honors graduate, publishes thesis
in the news: NYU Center on International Cooperation on January 20, 2010Michael Chaitkin, a 2008 CISAC honors graduate, has published his thesis as a policy report at NYU's Center on International Cooperation. The brief includes a forward by Bruce Jones, CIC director and CISAC consulting professor, and Richard Gowan, CIC associate director for policy. The report argues, contrary to the conventional wisdom, that sanctions are more likely to succeed when they yield conditions conducive to bargaining between the parties of the dispute. The author offers two policy recommendations to enable more effective application of sanctions.

CISAC awards certificates in international security studies to 12 seniors
in the newsCISAC conferred honors certificates to 12 undergraduates at a ceremony held under a sprawling oak tree outside Encina Hall on Friday, June 12. Students included Jane Esberg, who was awarded the Firestone Medal for her thesis on Regimes of Terror: The Relationship between Democracy and Terrorism in Chile and Sarah Catanzaro, who received the William J. Perry Prize for her research on Bin Laden's Henchmen: Al Qa'ida's Commanding Officers who are Leading the Global Jihad. The students were participants in CISAC's year-long Interschool Honors Program in International Security Studies. Read more »
