Op-ed: Washington Post on October 5, 2009J.P. Schnapper-Casteras, a recent CISAC fellow, argues in the Washington Post that despite the potential long-term benefits, only a few dozen Iraqis are able to study in the United States each year. By comparison, during the Cold War the United States and the Soviet Union exchanged 50,000 citizens over 30 years, producing more educated students and some of the most pro-Western and pro-democracy Soviet scholars and scientists.

Perry, Diamond, Fearon argue against more troops in Iraq
CISAC, CDDRL, FSI Stanford NewsWilliam J. Perry, former secretary of defense and Iraq Study Group member, was joined by Larry Diamond, former Coalition Provisional Authority advisor, and James Fearon, professor of political science at Stanford, for a Jan. 22 panel discussion on "Iraq: The Way Forward." In the discussion, which took place at FSI, Perry, Diamond, and Fearon all argued against sending more troops to Iraq, with Perry noting that the "cumulative effect of all these strategic errors has been a disastrous security situation."

Iraq Study Group advises troop pullback, Mideast diplomacy; CISAC's Perry on panel
in the news: New York Times, NPR on December 7, 2006The Iraq Study Group--on which William Perry, co-director of the Preventive Defense Project at CISAC, served as a member--released its report, advising a withdrawal of U.S. troops and negotiations with Iran, Syria, and other Middle East nations to make the best of a rapidly deteriorating situation in Iraq. Perry advocated a timeline for troop withdrawal and persuaded colleagues on the bipartisan panel to recommend clear goals for pulling out of Iraq, David E. Sanger reported in the New York Times.

Congress appoints Perry to Iraq Study Group
in the news: New York Times on April 24, 2006William J. Perry, co-director of the Preventive Defense Project at CISAC and 19th secretary of defense, has been chosen to serve on the congressionally mandated Iraq Study Group to generate new ideas on Iraq. The group is co-chaired by former Secretary of State James A. Baker III and Lee H. Hamilton, vice chair of the 9/11 commission investigating U.S. intelligence failures and former U.S. representative from Indiana. Read more »

Iraq now - headed for civil war or already there?
Op-ed: Time magazine on February 26, 2006Is civil war likely to break out in Iraq? It already has, according to CISAC faculty member James D. Fearon, a political science professor who studies recent civil wars. "By any reasonable definition," Fearon said, "there has been a civil war in progress in Iraq at least since the Coalition Provisional Authority formally handed over authority to the Iraqis in 2004." Fearon is among four experts Time asked to comment on what's going on in Iraq. Read more »
