Power & Responsibility book featured on Charlie Rose show
in the news: Charlie Rose on April 23, 2009Television interviewer Charlie Rose discussed the premise of "Power and Responsibility: Building International Order in an Era of Transnational Threats," a book coauthored by CISAC's Stephen Stedman, during a broadcast on April 23, 2009. Co-author Carlos Pascual of the Brookings Institution and Brent Scowcroft, former U.S. national security adviser who wrote the book's foreword, were interviewed.

Book offers new roadmap for tackling transnational threats
As fallout from accelerating climate change and the economic meltdown reveals, today's gravest threats are transnational, demanding unprecedented cooperation among competing nations to find lasting solutions. The policies and strategies developed for the balance-of-power rivalries of the 20th century no longer apply in this one, according to the authors of "Power & Responsibility," a book launched March 17 at Stanford.

Stedman, Jones, Pascual address Power and Responsibility in New Era of Transnational Threats
FSI Stanford in the newsIn their new book, Power and Responsibility: Building International Order in an Era of Transnational Threats, Stedman, Jones, and Pascual seek to mobilize more effective international action on transnational security threats and build political support for revitalizing international institutions. This requires a new foundation for security of "responsible sovereignty" -- requiring nations to protect their own people and to cooperate across borders to safeguard common resources and tackle common threats.

Experts debate key policy issues at FSI's fourth annual conference
FSI Stanford News"How grievous are the wounds the rule of law has sustained over the past seven and one-half years?" FSI Director Coit D. Blacker asked at the beginning of FSI's fourth annual conference, Transitions 2009. This year's conference, coming on the heels of the U.S. presidential election, focused on opportunities for change offered by historic transitions at home and abroad. The Nov. 13 invitation-only event was attended by 370 Stanford scholars, outside experts, policymakers, diplomats, and leaders from business, medicine, and law, bringing together some of the sharpest minds in the country to formulate and discuss recommendations for U.S. President-elect Barack Obama and other world leaders.
