It is well-known that life expectancy in the former Soviet Union has been declining since 1991. Some have argued that this "Russian Mortality Crisis" is a consequence of the collapse of the Soviet Union and the introduction of capitalism into Russia. This seed project tests a competing explanation. In particular, the investigators will measure the extent to which the cessation of a governmental temperance campaign (responsible for a dramatic rise in life expectancy during the 1980s) around the time of Russia's political and economic transition contributed to the abrupt rise in mortality.
